“CrossFit begins with a belief in fitness. The aim of CrossFit is to forge a broad, general and inclusive fitness. We have sought to build a program that will best prepare trainees for any physical contingency — not only for the unknown, but for the unknowable. After looking at all sport and physical tasks collectively, we asked, what physical skills and adaptations would most universally lend themselves to performance advantage. Capacity culled from the intersection of all sports demands would quite logically lend itself well to all sport. In summary, our specialty is not specializing.” – Coach Glassman, founder of CrossFit.

Remember this, “The needs of Olympic athletes and our grandparents differ by degree not kind.  Our soldiers, skiers, mountain bikers, and housewives have found their best fitness from the same regimen.”  What this means is that both the Olympic athlete and the mom need to have a functioning body that can do the common uncommonly well.  But the mom doesn’t need to beat the world; she just needs to push herself.

The goal is improving fitness on a slow trajectory towards a distant horizon.

An underlying goal is to fight off feebleness, sickness, sloth, and the nursing home.  It is our goal to be fitter in 10 years from now than we are today.

We teach technique first and then introduce intensity gradually.  We like intensity because of all the health benefits we get from it (listed below). Intensity also keeps us in the anaerobic energy system, creating a better fat-burning and body-toning environment.

Benefits of intensity:

  • Increases bone density
  • Increases fat-burning
  • Builds muscles
  • Proper body mobility
  • Increases HGH (Human Growth Hormone)
  • Positively influences insulin factors
